Frequently Asked Questions

Our list of the most frequently-asked questions will certainly shed light on the topic of memorial services. Still, it may not have the answer to your specific question. If that is the case, give us a call at 509-470-6702. A member of our staff will be pleased to provide you with the information you're looking for.

1. What is a memorial service?

2. What's involved in planning a memorial service?

3. How does it differ from a Life Celebration or funeral?

4. What items will I need to bring to the funeral home?

Question #1What is a memorial service?
Answer:A memorial service is similar to a funeral service in many ways. The main difference is that at a funeral, the body is present as a focal point for the service, whether in a closed or open casket, but at a memorial service, the body is not present. Usually, a framed portrait or an urn serves as the focal point at a memorial service.

Question #2What's involved in planning a memorial service?
Answer:If you decide to honor your loved one with a memorial service, there are many important choices you will need to make for creating a meaningful memorial service. The tasks include selecting the location, date and time of the service. You'll be asked to choose speakers to deliver a eulogy, read specific poems or scripture, musical selections, food or beverages, and/or the activities you'd like to feature. You've got a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to show the world how much your loved one meant to you. We invite you to speak with one of our service planning professionals to learn more.

Question #3How does it differ from a Life Celebration or funeral?
Answer:A memorial service is typically focused around a recent loss and often has religiousness. A life celebration is generally centered on the joy of having been blessed by the departed person's presence and is often nonreligious in nature. A Funeral service typically takes place with the body of the departed present, whereas a memorial service takes place without the actual body present.

Question #4What items will I need to bring to the funeral home?
Answer:You'll need to provide the documents/information required to complete your loved one's death certificate and obituary. You may also wish to bring in a collection of family photographs to be used in making a tribute video or in the decoration of the service location. Other items may be needed at some point, depending on the arrangements made. Your funeral director will provide you with an exact list of the things he or should would like you to bring along to the arrangement conference.
