Janet Gale West
January 12, 1956 – March 23, 2018
It is with deep sadness the family of Janet Gale “Jan” West announces her passing on Friday, March 23, 2018, at the age of 62. She was a longtime Leavenworth resident.
She was born on January 12, 1956 in Spokane, Washington, to Thomas Earl and Doris Jean (Mitchell) West. As a young child, the family moved to Leavenworth, WA. Janet received her elementary through high school education in Leavenworth. She continued her education at the Trend Business College in East Wenatchee.
Janet loved being outdoors and worked a variety of occupations throughout her life. She went to work for the U.S. Forest Service as a trail maintenance worker and she also worked for the Rocky Mountain Helicopters. She met and married Tom Leitz, a Helicopter Pilot, and they made their home together in Leavenworth. Janet continued working as a waitress, a Traffic Control Supervisor, and in 1991, she worked at Alcoa. In 2013, she made her home in Cashmere and continued to work until ill health forced her to accept early retirement.
Janet’s greatest attribute is her love of her family and friends; as she was an incredible counselor and loving support for us. She especially enjoyed the outdoors, camping, gardening, cooking, reading and playing the guitar.
Janet is survived by her five brothers and sisters: Sherrill Clark, of Wenatchee; Terry West, of Cashmere; Clayton West, Lorretta Powers, and Paula Gaughan, all of Leavenworth; 25 nieces and nephews and 33 great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Thomas West and Doris West, a brother Dart West, and a brother-in-law, Colin Powers.
A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at 5:00 pm at the Creekside Lodge, located at 11113 Chumstick Highway in Leavenworth, WA. You are invited to visit Janet’s tribute online at www.HeritageMemorialChapel.com and leave a memory. Arrangements are in the care of Heritage Memorial Chapel, East Wenatchee.
